Baby Vitamins: Is Popular Always Best?

At one of our first newborn check-ups, our pediatrician strongly recommended starting our daughter on Tri-Vi-Sol vitamin drops for the benefits of vitamins: A, D, & C. Even though she is breastfed and we assumed she was getting what she needed from me, we wanted to be responsible parents and picked it up the next day. When my husband returned from the pharmacy, he cautioned that he wasn’t crazy about the ingredients because it had not only artificial colors but flavors. All through my pregnancy I was careful what I ate in order to give her the best start. Being that she wasn’t on anything BUT natural food...the last thing we wanted to give her was what we considered a tradeoff for vitamins. I went ahead, did some research, and spoke to other mothers who try to provide their children with more natural foods and supplements. I came across the Twin Lab brand and was really pleased with the ingredients I read on the box. No preservatives, added colors, or artificial flavors. It even had the benefits of DHA, which has been promoted for brain development and is also recommended to be included as pre-natal care. I will say that the Twin Lab drops wasn’t warmly accepted the first few times I slipped in the eye-dropper full of liquid, but she became use to it, and I felt better knowing it was healthier without the added “stuff”. You can decide for yourself. Read the labels next time you are in the store. I will say I was disappointed that Tri-Vi-Sol is pushed when I wonder if it’s worth the trade-off when there seems to be viable alternatives. If anyone knows another vitamin that is equally as natural and even more appealing to an infant’s palate...please do share! I’m still searching the necessity of added vitamins in addition to breastfeeding...but have no conclusion on that. (One word of caution, the Twin Lab's drops may stain, so I am careful to use a bib/burpie when giving it.)
