Video Monitors: Although They Keep Baby Safe How Safe Are They?

I will be the first to say I swear by our video monitor. I didn't think we needed one since our bedrooms are not far apart, but so glad I took my sister's advice. Instead of peaking in the room, it's so easy to look on our dresser and see her sleeping soundly...or sitting up waiting to be fed!  There are times I may see a limb dangling out from one of the bars and know I need to reposition her before she falls asleep. It's like a cellphone, you don't think you need it until you have one.  Then you can't imagine life without!

However, I have wondered how safe it is being a picture is projected from her room to ours or wherever the tv monitor is positioned at the time.  I am a little leary of all the waves bouncing through our house as it is.  I like to think I have control over some. We have recently started unplugging our computer modem at night when we sleep. We have also talked about getting a hard line for our home phone instead of always being on a portable. If we have an option to use one with a cord...we feel that is better.

We have recently moved the monitor further from her crib to play it safer...but it still makes me wonder. I just know her body is growing so fast, and cells are dividing so quickly, that I want to keep her environment as pure as possible without all the emissions of waves we don't fully comprehend. Once we step out doors we don't have much control.  But just like using the microwave, which is another story, the more electronics we can monitor in our own home, the better. Once she is out of the crib, we won't be needing the monitor anymore. So we have another 2 years??

One source said keeping it at least a meter away makes a significant difference.

If anyone has done their own research, I would love to hear what you have found.
